Dear Friends,
Oh no, another story about painting! As you’ve read over the past couple years, I am learning to paint. I’ve actually improved a lot in the time I have been with you. And this is due to taking lots of classes.
Since April, some friends and I have gathered for an afternoon of a video lesson and lunch. It’s been great fun. At the end of every lesson, the instructor says, “I’m going to call this done.” I’ve learned the important lesson that sometimes you just need to stop, to call it done.
For instance, the painting that I am sharing with you is one that I could work on for much longer. The rocks could be improved, the lighthouse is maybe a bit too bright, and there is something funky going on with the wave. Of course, I could try and fix all these imperfections, but I’m happy with what I have. I’m calling it done.
I think this is an important lesson for the work of an interim pastor. Our calls, my call, is not to stay as long as a “settled” pastor. My call is to work with a congregation to help them get to what is next. Traditionally that has been to call another pastor. The church is changing and what is traditional is not always what happens next.
I realized last summer that it was time for me to “call it done as your interim pastor.” We’ve made some wonderful progress on some important issues. When I think about the work of the church, I can tell myself, “But we need to still do this, or that.” But the reality is that we will always have things, important things, that we need to work on. In this sense the work is never done. You will all do the work of ministry together.
I am so pleased that Chelsea will be serving in a different capacity as your Bridge Pastor. You all are going to do great things together, and I look forward to watching from afar.
Last, I am thankful for the way you all welcomed me into your community. I am thankful for the volunteers. I am thankful for the leadership. I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday, and writing one more newsletter article.
Peace,
Pastor Nancy
