Dear ALC Family,
Happy weekend! My half marathon last week went well…it was hard and hot and still fun.
Overall, we had a wonderful weekend. My next race will be a marathon on October 6 in
Minnesota.
I am almost done reading, Walter Brueggemann’s book, “Sabbath as Resistance: Saying NO to
the CULTURE OF NOW” with next week having the final post. This week are looking at
multitasking, or more specifically, “Resistance to Multitasking.”
As a multitasker, I approached this chapter with a bit of trepidation. For instance, as I write this,
I am half-listening to political news. Half-listening. This is key because the disadvantage of
multitasking is that we are not able to put our full attention on either task. I can listen or I can
write but I cannot effectively do both.
This is Brueggemann’s point in this chapter.
In the context of the Sabbath, the question is, “are we fully resting and worshipping on the Sabbath, or are we thinking of all those things we want to do when the Sabbath is over?”
Or, while in worship (or resting), how often do we look at our cell phones?
What might our Sabbath rest look like if we are able to set aside the distractions of the day or thoughts of tomorrow to fully rest?
How might we better see our neighbor if we were able to put distractions aside?
How might we be the church for the world if we set aside distractions?
I am still contemplating these questions. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Peace in Christ,
Pastor Nancy
